Hi , I would like to ask you about a scar treatment.
It is for my 9 yr old daughter who has a 2 yr old hypertrophic, 8 inches vertical scar from an operation in the middle of her abdomen. It is still raised, reddish and hard…
I have read that Helichrysum, Frankincense, Lavender and Rose are good for dissolving scar tissue and improving appearance of scars even if they are old.
However I wanted to ask you in what proportion should I use them, shall I dilute them or shall I apply them topically one after the other with a 5 min interval in between.
Also, I have read in some websites that Helichrysum should not be used on children less than 12 yrs old, is that so? Thank you so much, and I am waiting impatiently your answer.
Ask An Aromatherapist Answer
Aromatherapy Essential Oils for Scars
Essential oils that are used to reduce the appearance of scars include:
1. Carrot seed essential oil
2. Helichrysum essential oil
Essential Oil Safety Information for Children
When using aromatherapy oils to reduce the appearance of scars, do not use Helichrysum essential oil on children aged less than 12 years old.
Carrier Oils for Natural Scar Treatment
Regardless of whether you are using the essential oils for scars or for any other condition, always dilute essential oils before applying them to the skin unless you are under the direct supervision of an aromatherapist because they are very concentrated substances and they can cause severe reactions. These essential oils can be diluted with oils known as carrier oils.
Carrier oils that are very effective for minimizing scars and that can be used on children include:
2. Tamanu oil
3. Hazelnut oil
To answer your question of if you should wait for 5 minute intervals before applying the essential oils, I suggest that you use the essential oils and carrier oils to make small quantities of scar treatment massage oils and store them in a cool place. Ensure that you always shake the bottle before applying the oils and the entire application process should not take no more than 2 minutes.
Rosehip Scar Massage Oil
9 drops Lavender essential oil
9 drops Carrot seed essential oil
1 oz (30 ml) Rosehip seed oil
Mix all the ingredients in a dark bottle.
To use, massage the scar with the oil daily.
Essential Oil Sensitivity
Since scar treatment is a long term process and you will need to apply the oils for several months, I suggest switching the aromatherapy recipes to avoid developing sensitivity to the essential oils. Therefore do not use one essential oil for a period of 2 months without taking a break.
